Suggestions on who to see at Moogfest 2010, by Chall Gray:

SLEIGH BELLS

On the forefront of hipsterdom you’ll find Sleigh Bells, a two-piece from Brooklyn whose loud, make that really loud, music is a fun, danceable assault on your eardrums. This noise-pop band’s songs are often light on lyrics, heavy on Derek Miller’s catchy guitar hooks and Alexis Krauss’ irresistible voice.

See them at 7:15 p.m., Sunday, October 31, Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.

CARIBOU

A project of virtuoso electronic musician Daniel Snaith, Caribou albums are usually composed solely by Snaith, while for live shows he plays percussion and has a band accompanying. Caribou’s latest album Swim was one of the most fun and interesting albums to come out this past summer, incorporating many different genres, influences and instruments into one fun dance party.

See them at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 30, Asheville Civic Center

VAN DYKE PARKS

Van Dyke Parks has been making music longer than most of the Moogfest performers have been alive, and he’s worked with everyone from the Beach Boys to Joanna Newsom to Loudon Wainwright III. His work has at times fallen into the genres of orchestral composition, psychedelic pop, dance music, and even the soundtrack to the tv series adaptation of Harold & the Purple Crayon.

See him at 11:00 p.m., Friday, October 29, Thomas Wolfe Auditorium

THE OCTOPUS PROJECT

Hailing from Austin, TX, the four members of the Octopus Project are all very talented musicians, and they are known to switch instruments from one song to the next, the results being a mesmerizing and very catchy blending of analog instruments and electronic sounds. This performance should be one of the gems of the festival.

See them 6:30 p.m., Friday, October 29, Thomas Wolfe Auditorium

RBTS WIN

One of the few local acts on the bill, RBTS WIN certainly deserves the honor. Recent winners of the Best Experimental Band category in the Mountain Xpress 2010 Best Of Awards, they are a (to quote the band themselves) “soul, indie, folk, hip hop group”. Their newest album Everything I do I Raining… can be downloaded for free at www.rbtswin.com.

See them at 11:30 p.m., Saturday, October 30, Stella Blue

We're paying the dough to support Caribou. One of the best live shows I've ever seen.
