The Miss Gay Latina pageant is set to be held Saturday at Diana Wortham Theater. The event marks a sort of coming out party for the community of gay Hispanics here in Western North Carolina. The event is an annual event in Asheville, but it’s been a really underground affair.
Until now, that is. Local filmmaker Rod Murphy has been working on a documentary film about the subculture, with the backing of Hollywood actress and Asheville resident Andie MacDowell. MacDowell told the Asheville Citizen-Times that “it has the potential to be a beautiful story.” The Citizen-Times also reported that new Asheville resident Cachita will be hosting the pageant. Cachita, 38, first came to fame by winning a singing contest on the popular Univision TV series “Sibado Gigante,” according to the newspaper.By the late 1990s, she was a personality on the “El Gordon y La Flaca Show” on that same network. She left Univision after a 10-year run, according to the newspaper.
On one other note, another local filmmaker, Paul Schattel, has been helping with the doc and shares this video footage. Can’t wait to see the pageant, and the final film.
