Pretty amazing news here. Everybody remember Mimi Page? She was the former WLOSer hit and killed on I-240 while on her way to work one morning. The foundation in her name allows her love of animals to live on. Press release here:

The Mimi Paige Foundation is donating $20,000 to the Humane Alliance for low cost spay/neuter for 1,000 dogs from West Asheville, Candler and Leicester. The press conference and donation will be May 1, 2009 at 10:30am at the Humane Alliance on Heritage Dr. in Asheville, NC.

Recent studies have shown that these three zip codes (28806, 28715, 28748) turn in more unwanted animals to the county shelter than any other area of the county. The Mimi Paige Foundation is very cognizant of hard economic times and how challenging this can be to pet owners.  This donation will allow 1,000 dogs to be spayed or neutered at the cost of $35 to the animal’s owner. We believe that this will be invaluable to the citizens of Buncombe County and ensure that folks who could not afford this will be able to keep their pets. Shelley Moore, director of Asheville Humane said “This donation to help pay for spay and neuter of dogs in the targeted zip codes will ultimately help reduce the number of animals entering the shelter.  It’s a huge contribution to our efforts to reduce the euthanasia of healthy animals in Buncombe County.  We are grateful!”

Dog owners who are interested in taking advantage of this offer should contact the Humane Alliance at 828-252-2079 to schedule an appointment.

The Mimi Paige Foundation’s mission is to lower the number of homeless animals. Spay/neuter is tantamount to getting that number significantly lower.

The foundation has never done this type of gift.  The generosity of a donor has made this possible.

This donation is being made in memory of Kayla, the foundation’s “spokesdog,” who recently passed away. Kayla served this community faithfully as a therapy dog, visited schools, homeless shelters and appeared in many commercials for the foundation.

The foundation is grateful for the support of the Literacy Council, YWCA, community leaders of Leicester and other prominent community organizers.

The Mimi Paige Foundation is a founding member of the Buncombe County Save a Life Campaign.
