I got a nice note from Rhea, who manages the electro-pop band Menya, straight outta the NYC. Here’s her pitch:
I currently manage an electro-pop band from NYC called Menya, comprised of three undergrad NYU students. They are embarking on a tour in mid-March from New York down to Miami, and will be hitting Asheville on Friday, March 12th. …
Menya just put out a new, free mixtape and has received some nice coverage from it – Perez Hilton recently tweeted about Menya, they were one of New York Post’s bands to watch, and they had a front page feature on the music website Purevolume.com. In addition, Menya has been covered in TheRollingStone.Com, Out Magazine, Guardian UK, Blender Magazine, and MSN Music. They’ve played New York’s CMJ festival and SUNY’s Culture Shock Festival (where they opened for The Cool Kids), as well as colleges like UVA, Penn State, VCU, Purchase, and Drexel (just to name a few). As a developing band with a growing college following, we’d love to do something with you while they are in town.
On a related note, the Mountain Xpress has a story today about Asheville’s love affair with electronica. A snippet:
Fueling Asheville’s newfound fondness for electronica is certainly the live band/electronic fusion — anything from the live instruments-meets-computers of The Nova Echo to live sequencing of engineered loops and beats as performed by Freepeoples Frequency. But more than sonic accessibility, it’s technical accessibility that brings new fans to the multifaceted genre. Music makers no longer need to be piano or guitar virtuosos — computer proficiency and a desire to create are the instruments of this under-represented but increasingly available art form.
