Lunar Aid 1985: $21M Asheville Kickstarter to record space folk album on the Moon makes BoingBoing

Top blog BoingBoing, one of the most-read blogs in the world, picked up a story on an Asheville Kickstarter attempt: Lunar Aid 1985. The brainchild of local bloggers Jim MacKenzie and Sarah Giavedoni of Stuff Monsters Like, Space Folk Album: Lunar Aid 1985 wants to raise $21M to buy the moon, construct a moon base and write a folk album.

A $21M Kickstarter project aims to record an album of lunar folk music, on the Moon. Erik writes, “This video breaks down the entire plan for purchasing, colonizing, and writing a folk album on the moon, down to giving Neil DeGrasse Tyson a year long salary for being awesome, and includes a sample Lunar folk song. Also, the people in it are dressed like Frankenstein’s Monster and its bride.”

Stuff Monsters Like’s fundrasing campaign will run June 1 through June 30. The blog is asking for $578 billion to complete their entire journey and album. Kickstarter has limited them to asking for just over $21 million for their first round of fundraising.

The bloggers will use the funds to travel to the moon, build the moon base, and write a folk album entitled “Lunar Aid 1985.”
