All about gourmet winter soup
The Well Fed Network posted a short entry about gourmet winter soup offerings at Ashvegas restaurants. It’s written by Kelby Carr, of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce.
Warren Wilson students head to Guam
Guam.com says 18 Warren Wilson students will be visiting to jam:
Eighteen students from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. will come to Guam, Palau and Pohnpei with their music. They will stage a concert highlighting the musical styles and traditions that have influenced their own southern Appalachian region. They will perform on Dec. 30 at Jeff’s Pirates Cove in Ipan Talofofo. Featured will be unaccompanied Appalachian ballads, Celtic tunes, early American shape-note singing, African traditional singing, and more.
No barbecue for you
The awesome 12 Bones restaurant is closed for a month for the holidays. I recommend Luella’s Bar-B-Cue at 1950 Hendersonville Road if you need your fix.
Stephanie’s Id and Bandazian go to Washington
The Washington Post has the tidbit:
The late show changes the vibe and ups the volume with a trio of talented young regional rock bands. Stephanie’s Id has earned Best Rock Band and Best Indie Band honors two years in a row in its Asheville, N.C., home town for its upbeat indie pop.
The group started with the writing team of Stephanie Morgan (vocalist) and Chuck Lichtenberger (keyboardist). After releasing a live album with reworkings of old jazz and R&B standards in 2004, the duo toured with drummer/producer Vic Stafford and added vibraphonist Matthew Richmond for its 2005 debut as Stephanie’s Id. The CD’s haunting sound got regular airplay on regional WNCW and inspired the Asheville Ballet to choreograph “ANNA! A Rock Ballet” to its songs. An EP (“This EP is MONEY“) followed in early 2006, a year that the touring band changed to include bassist Rob Geisler and guitar whiz Michael Libramento. In a note to Live!, Morgan noted that the Jammin’ Java show will be a little different: “We’ll be doing a special trio show with vintage drum machine for this appearance.”
…
Also on the bill are fellow Ashevillians, the quartet Bandazian. Making a loud “hard pop” sound that crackles with hummable tunes, the band won Asheville’s Rocktoberfest Battle of the Bands in October and plans to record again in early 2008, adding to a discography that includes the full-length “In Vacant Fields” (2006) and this year’s “Crocodile Tears” EP.

Luella’s doesn’t get the brisket right.
I spend 8-10 hours a day in a restaurant kitchen, so if I am going out to eat (which is a lot like working at a newspaper then deciding to hang out in the lobby reading on your off time), there better be a damned smoke ring 1/4 inch thick on my beef brisket!
So far, no one has done it right besides 12 bones since I’ve started working here.
