The North Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States with various activities during the next 4 years. Sesquicentennial Chairman Sue Curtis of Salisbury stated that the Division’s Sesquicentennial Lecture Series will consist of 8 free lectures throughout the state during each year.

The third lecture, “North Carolina Secedes,” will be held in the home county of North Carolina’s third war governor, Zebulon B. Vance, on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the Veteran’s Restoration Quarters located at 1329 Tunnel Rd. in Asheville. The public is invited to attend to hear Dr. Gary Freeze, author and history professor at Catawba College in Salisbury. This college is located in the hometown of UDC member Frances Fisher Tiernan (“Christian Reid”) who authored a novel in 1876 titled The Land of the Sky and who has a memorial marker at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher.
