Late breaking news: a shooting spree at Stephens-Lee and some stolen blasting caps in Madison County

WLOSers had some big late-breaking news on the 11:

Stephens-Lee shooting
Kassandra “Special K” Pride said a gunman entered Stephens-Lee Recreation Center about 6:30 and opened fire on a group of about 70 people gathered there to hang out and play some pick-up basketball. Three people were injured, none seriously.

Special K said the shooter remains on the loose. She said police didn’t offer a possible motive. There were some interviews with some scared neighbors of the rec center and an upset parent of a kid, who said her child won’t be going back to the recreation center near downtown Asheville.

Special K didn’t even bring up the obvious question – was this a gang-related shooting? Guess we’ll have to keep an eye on this one. That’s a pretty brazen attack.

Stolen explosives
Meantime, Carolyn “Little Red” Ryan went up to Madison County to talk to Sheriff John Ledford, who said that somebody broke into the French Broad Electric Co-op compound where they keep equipment and stole cooper wire, tools and “a large quantity of high explosives,” with blasting caps.

Was this dynamite? Carolyn didn’t tell us. Nor did she tell us just how much was taken. The sheriff told Carolyn that he notified the FBI and the BATF because he was worried that either the thief didn’t know exactly what he had and how dangerous it was or that the thief knew exactly what he had and might be planning some sort of terrorist attack.

The theft actually reminds us of Eric Robert Rudolph, who stole a large quantity of dynamite from a company in Asheville and use it in his bomb-making. He also buried a bunch of it in the mountains for future use, but told the cops where it was after his arrest. More to come on this, for sure.
