Author, editor and teacher Joy Neaves will lead a reading of local writers’ works for young adults and children, in the next installment of UNC Asheville’s Fall 2010 Writers at Home series. The reading begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.
Neaves teaches the Writing for Children Workshop at UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program. At Malaprop’s, Neaves and her workshop students – Billie Buie, Regina Fallon, Tony Freeman, Andrea Jacobsen, Miriam McNamara and Karen Miller – will read their works.
Neaves is assistant director of UNC Asheville’s Writing Center and an editor at namelos.com, a publisher of books for children and young adults. She began her career at Front Street Books, Inc. and has more than a decade of experience as an editor of children’s picture books, poetry, middle grade and young adult fiction. She has overseen the publication of several internationally acclaimed authors and was the editor for Lemniscaat, a Dutch imprint. Neaves graduated from UNC Asheville with a degree in literature and language. She lives in West Asheville with her family.
Karen Miller, whose book, “Monsters and Water Beasts: Creatures of Fact or Fiction?” was published in 2007, is also a contributor to the Chicago Tribune and National Geographic World. Billie Buie received the Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize in 2007 and has published several short stories in literary journals such as Calyx Journal and WNC Woman.
