Jodie Manross opened for CX-1 at the Grey Eagle on Saturday night. It was the first time I’d ever heard Manross’s vocal stylings, and I have to tell you I was impressed. I did some Web searching to read up on her afterward. As best I can tell, she’s been on the Knoxville scene for a good six or seven years. She had a band that opened for acts like John Mayer, Rusted Root, Leon Russell, Keb’ Mo’, Scott Miller, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Norman Blake, Jump (Little Children), the Pat McGhee Band, Jonatha Brooke and Olu Dara.
But her band broke up, and she’s been out on her own for awhile. In all the press material I read, everyone made a big deal about her small size (she’s 5-foot-2) and her big voice. She has a wonderfully powerful voice. Here’s how one entertainment writer described it: “her crisp voice and illuminative songcraft [are] equal parts wistful and urgent; it’s atmospheric music that will touch your heart and mind.”
Good description. Check her out if you get the chance.

She was ok. I thought she whined a little too much. I didn’t ever feel any of those cool moments of "live music intensity" or anything. I dunno. She didn’t suck though. Her percussion guy was pretty kick ass and could have fronted a show on his own IMO.
