Ingles replaces in-store video rental departments with Redbox movie vending machines

Word on the street is that Ingles grocery stores around Asheville are closing their video rental departments and moving in Redbox movie vending machines. I don’t know if this is a chain-wide move or not. I’ve heard that the grocery store chain is trying to find positions within the company for workers affected by the shuttering of the video rental departments, but undoubtedly some people will be out of work.

Redbox as a company has been growing by leaps and bounds and recently announced that it was going to launch an online DVD rental service, which would put it in competition with Netflix.

If you’re in the West Asheville area, we have hundreds of blu-rays. Less at our downtown store, but the inventory is growing fast.

Redbox is test marketing both games and blu-ray, but I don’t know if they will ever roll it out nationwide. Games especially is tough for anyone to make a profit on.

What sucks about this is now we have less choices for Blu-Ray! I have yet to find a Blu-Ray disc in a redbox in this area.

I think this is a loss for the video game community… Ingles carried a decent selection of games, but Redbox carries none (except for a few select machines in trial). Makes me sad…

That is awesome news. Been a fan of RedBox and parent company CoinStar for years now.
