Huffington Post blogger profiles Asheville humorist Susan Reinhardt

Kristen Houghton’s profile of Susan Reinhardt is here on the Huffington Post site.

A tidbit:

Being funny doesn’t mean that Susan shies away from painful personal issues in her books. Like many people who are comedic, she has seen the dark side of life. She has suffered from, and been hospitalized for, alcoholism and depression. In her book, “Never Sleep With A Bubba Unless Your Eggs Are in Wheelchairs,” she shares her struggles with depression and becomes more real and more like one of us in that revelation. Besides making you laugh, she can break your heart.
Besides writing Reinhardt has made herself available as a public speaker. Delving into her own battles with depression and illness, her topics, “Healing Through Humor,” and “Out of the Darkness,” are designed to remove the stigma of depression, and let others know it is possible to find a life of joy. In her own life, she will tell you, her sense of humor has always pulled her through.
Susan Reinhardt says that “I try to write books that give people great belly laughs or tears of joy and inspiration.” In each case she succeeds admirably

You people are really hard on me. I have always been friendly and open.
You might not find my work funny, but plenty do, and I'm from a snob.
I'm very open and warm to all. You guys are really twisted and need Prozac. I checked out your credentials and all of you are anonymous, meaning the same person more than once. Don't be a chicken shit. Post your REAL email address.

Apparently this bunch of grumps requires more to tickle their funny bone than poor Susan can deliver. I'm thinkin' Jeff Foxworthy is more their speed.

Oh, Bugg. You jealous fool. You suck at writing. Move on to something more fitting of your skill set, you hapless gorilla. Might I suggest picking up an application at your local McDonald's, or maybe enrolling at the nearest clown college?

No wonder the woman suffers from depression, if this is the climate she has to write in. Why so much hostility towards someone who attempts to bring levity and joy with her writing? Is she a Tolstoy? No, but that is not her specialty. She finds humor in the mundane and everyday. Her articles on body image and breast cancer ( note the wig) are extremely poignant. Just because she did not acknowledge you in a elevator that makes her a hack? Perhaps she might not be your cup of tea, but she puts herself out there and produces something positive, which is gracious more than any of the above posters are putting forth in this world.

I've met her before and found her very cold and distant. She's hard to talk to, which is strange for someone who supposedly is a writer about life's ups and downs and an observer of human nature. Not so, she is cold and distant, just as seen in the pic with this posting.

I agree with the other posts here that I don't think her material is very funny at all. I think she may have had a few funny anecdotes years and years ago, but her writing is just not funny or relevant for my taste.

I have never found even a speck of humor in her writing. Working in the same building with her for two years and me offering several hellos, how ya doin's, etc… I never got a peep or nod of acknowledgement. I found her rude, self-absorbed and not funny in the least. The last thing I would find myself doing would be trying to plow through an entire book from this snoot.

YUK!

This profile hinges on the reader believing that a hack like Reinhardt is funny. My grandmother dying in hospice was funnier.

I've never thought she was the least bit funny. Just stupid stuff.

Susan Reinhardt is a less than stellar writer and pathetic newspaper columnist. She has been at it way too long and it really shows as she repeats herself over and over. She's tried to be a self-styled Erma Bombeck, but has fallen flat on her face in the humor dept. And her tales of personal woes are just lame. Sorry, there's just no other way to describe her writing. Only in Asheville, NC at a newspaper as bad as the Citizen-Times could someone of so little talent continue to plod along.
