Many people balk at the idea of requiring licenses for bicyclists, but if the money would go toward bike lanes and such, I’d gladly pay it.

A simple fix for everyone is to require a license to ride on highways and or state roads. The money generated by the license fee would pay for bike lanes and keep everyone safe, cyclists and auto drivers both. Motorcyclists have a seperate required license as do 18 wheel trucks, middle weight trucks, busses and 15 passenger vans.

Then add the bike lanes in the most densely populated areas first and add more as money permits.

Holly Jones wants to be a commissioner? Yeeehaaa:=(

I’m at work so I can’t watch this right now to see what points she makes. However, while I agree that bicyclists absolutely should honor the rules of the road, a big obstacle in making Asheville a truly bike-friendly town is educating drivers on the rights of bicyclists. Even when you ride as far to the right as possible, it’s not uncommon for cars to pass with a foot or less of clearance, and buses and police cars have been known to do this as well. Additionally, many people seem to be under the impression that cyclists are required to ride on the sidewalk, so rude comments and middle fingers are not uncommon either.

What idiotic statements. First let’s get out of the way that, yes, I think bicyclists should obey the law; unfortunately, there are plenty who don’t always do so. But has the esteemed Ms. Jones ever looked around her to compare the percentage of the automobile driving road users who disobey the law to the cyclists who do the same? Just watch for yourself–"California stops," speeding, lane changes or turns without signaling (local law enforcement are probably the worst offenders for this), trying to beat the yellow turning to red, etc. And what’s her beef about helmets? The law doesn’t require adults to wear helmets while cycling. Sure, it’s probably smart to wear them (and I do, almost without exception), but it’s hardly an issue to bring up when criticizing all-the-cyclists-except-those-of-you-in-the-room. If you’re on city council and you don’t even know the laws you’re supposed to be discussing, please have the decency to keep your mouth shut until you actually review said laws.
