Here comes the Rush

Share

The Rush fitness centers has been advertising big in Asheville, but I haven’t seen much about them. They say they’re a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week gym with Olympic pools and everything. There’s going to be on Haywood Road, but I don’t know where.

It all sounds a bit sketchy. Asheville’s not a big city. Can we really support a gym that’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week? I don’t know.

the body shop is also a 24 hour gym. i was a member there for 2 years and it was very convenient. the owner is a jerk so we thought we would try somewhere else more convenient to our house. we changed to the ymca and i hate it! the hours are bad and its always packed! you cant use the basketball court because it is packed with kids nonstop! even during the week they bring very young kids in to run around and play in there. i was told i needed to shoot on one goal so the kids can run around and play games.(not basketball) so i think we can use another 24 hour gym here in asheville! im sure some of the body shop members will defect to the new gym.

You are correct Peak fitness was a 24 hour gym. The reason it folded is because of the sales of memberships had declinced and no one liked that the wet area was down all the time. I think that Rush will do good if they do have all the amentities that they say they offer because not a lot of gyms in the greater asheville area have a wet area (pools, saunas, hottubs, etc) so therefore, i think that the gym will do sufficent IF they can get sales in this time of LOW sales.

I pass the corner of Haywood Rd. and Patton Ave. several times per week, and I haven’t noticed anything happening.

That said, the gym at the Westgate Shopping Center was a 24/7 affair, was it not? It folded, though I’m not sure of the reason.

Incidentally, two employees of that gym were among the three young men charged in the murder of Mr. Chriss which happened in June 2006 on Pacoda St. in Asheville, if memory serves. All three are still awaiting trial in the Buncombe County Jail. I wish somebody would do a story about that crime and those young men. Why hasn’t there been a trial yet? Can the jailers just hold those guys forever?

I just went to the O’Reilly Auto Parts store today and was asking the dude behind the counter what the painting was for next door. He said that the old Ingles property there will be the temporary home of Rush while they renovate the former Bi-Lo on Patton to be the main gym. That guy said that the gym is going to have a pool and a basketball court and the whole shebang. I’m with you, though. Can this town really support that kind of a place?

There’s a big billboard for it near the Sonic on Patton that says locations on Haywood and Hendersonville. Perhaps South Asheville can support something that big, but two locations? Seems ambitious…maybe too ambitious.

is that what they are doing in the old Ingles property on the corner of Haywood and Patton?
