I’ve got a crush on Harmony. She took me for a ride I’ll never forget.
When I met her this afternoon, she had golden ribbons in her hair. She sported sensible shoes. I learned she was five. That she was a working girl.
Her owner, Doc, had Harmony clip-clopping around Lake Louise in Weaverville. Turns out that Doc, Harmony and a group of other horses all work for Mission Harmony. Doc told me that Mission Harmony, a non-profit, helps young kids by giving them a taste of outdoor life. Doc and Harmony live on 14-acres in Reems Creek.
Doc talked up a storm while Harmony walked, and trotted, us around Lake Louise. He mostly talked about Harmony. He talked about Harmony’s hoof “jungle rot.” He talked about entering Harmony in an endurance race. He talked about Harmony’s incredibly low resting heart rate. He talked about Harmony’s special street shoes. Doc was great.
Don’t be surprised if you see Doc and Harmony out on the street. They’ve been known to trek down Merrimon to Greenlife. And if you feeling like supporting a good cause, slip Doc a few dollars and wish Harmony a Merry Christmas.

Hello. And Bye.
Former Ashevillian – you are correct. I’ll give credit where credit is due. But it’s so much more fun to give them shit when they miss it…
Weaverville Woman – Thanks for the suggestions! We’ll see you there.
i’m glad you enjoyed your first visit to well-bred. did you take home a loaf of freshly baked bread? the cranberry/walnut on thursday is smooth as butta.
we have many other sites in weaverville for you to discover, too. go to blue mountain pizza in the evening and have a yummy pizza and listen to live local music!
drive out any evening (except monday) or ride the bus! you’ll find a surprise every night of the week! except monday, our wonderful restaurants, including stoney knob, close on monday.
if you love the music of apalachia (and who doesn’t?), they play often on friday nights at well-bred, and doc is always there for that.
hope to meet you soon!
I enjoy reading your blog, especially keeping up with WLOS. But I do have one question: you always pick on the weather staff for missing forecasts. How about giving them some credit when they get one right (i.e. the ice storm)? Just wondering…..
You’re welcome. Meeting the two came as a happy little surprise during my afternoon – a pre-Christmas treat. I need to e-mail him some of these photos.
I stopped at Well-Bred after the ride and was well impressed by their operation. It’s the first time I’d been in there. What a great little shop. I hope you’re doing your fair share in keeping them in business.
You guys got it goin’ on. Of course, I’ve known that for a long time, as a proud Black Hawk and all…
thanks for the blog on doc and harmony!
i see him in well-bred on his laptop all the time. and i’ve followed the two of them as they traversed merrimon. they’re good about pulling off the road and letting the new-fangled buggies go by.
Nice. Got personality.
