While people around the world were shooting off fireworks and dropping big, lighted balls, our people in Western North Carolina continued a grand New Year’s tradition all our own – the annual Possum Drop.
That’s right. Cage up a little possum, pull him up to the top of a tall pole, have some laughs and count down the new year. That’s how they do it at Clay’s Corner out in Brasstown. Ahhhh, tradition. This New York Times story from a few years ago describes it all quite nicely.
Happy 2008!
