This was big news when the spa opened a decade ago. Press release here:

The award winning Spa at The Grove Park Inn is celebrating its 10th birthday with a special contest for Facebook fans and great deals to celebrate spring. The Spa has received dozens of accolades since opening on February 28, 2001, including rankings of number 13 in the world and number six in the United States by Travel & Leisure magazine.

The Spa at The Grove Park Inn is more than 43,000 square feet in size, 16,000 of which are amenities which include mineral pools with soothing underwater music, waterfall pools, contrast pools, a lap pool, an inhalation room, sauna and a eucalyptus-infused steam room. Separate Men’s and Women’s Relaxation Lounges offer spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

As part of The Spa’s 10th birthday celebration, Facebook fans will be asked to submit stories about their favorite experiences at The Spa. The Facebook contest will end on March 22, when three lucky winners will receive an 80 minute massage, a pedicure or manicure, and a Day Spa pass for a friend. So become a Facebook fan and start sharing your favorite Spa memories!

They give you these velour bean bags to wear around your neck that smell like apple pie when you heat them up in the microwave. Just take those home with you, along with the robe and footwear and it brings the costs down a bit.

I think the mold problem was finally fixed, but you don't ever really get rid of it completely, especially in a warm and wet place like a spa. We had a friend who stayed there last year and she said the spa was ok, but nothing really great like the high end spas in other places. I've never seen the Grove Park Inn's spa listed on the survey of best spa and resorts in the US in Travel & Leisure magazine. Yes, it is quite expensive.

I'm still wondering about the nasty problems they had with mold at the spa shortly after it opened. I know some people who used to work there and they said it was much worse than anyone could have imagined. Sure hope it was finally cleaned up. I know too that the spa never really paid off for GPI the way it was envisioned. Compared to many other hotel spas, the one at the GPI is pretty average, but still pretty expensive.
