Press release here:
ASHEVILLE – Sometimes it’s stinky; sometimes it’s crusty; and sometimes it’s slimy. Explore why your body produces mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly and stinky gunk at Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body at The Health Adventure, opening September 25. Based on the best-selling book Grossology, this exhibition uses sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits to tell you the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and much more. Grossology is presented locally by Mission Children’s Hospital and will be featured at The Health Adventure until January 3, 2010.
Visit the Vomit Center and learn the process to vomiting. Stop by the Toot Toot exhibit to create different sounds that replicate the physics of gas. Mimic the build up of acid indigestion by causing the Burp Machine to release a giant belch. Explore the role of the kidney in Urine: The Game. Climb a large-scale replica of human skin, and discover other mysterious ways your body’s biology does what it needs to do to keep you healthy.
Grossology is a collaboration between Science World, Advanced Exhibits, a division of Advanced Animations, LLC., and Grossology author Sylvia Branzei. As a teacher, writer, curriculum designer and microbiologist Branzei explains the concept of Grossology as a learning tool. “This is science in disguise,” she says. “If we teach students in their own words, they’ll understand better and actually learn something.”
Before The Health Adventure gets totally gross, there is still time to enjoy Arthur’s™ World. The exhibit, based on the PBS children’s television series and popular Marc Brown books, is open at The Health Adventure through September 6.
In Arthur’s™ World, children engage in role-playing and reading activities in their favorite Arthur settings. The exhibit includes Mr. Ratburn’s Classroom, The Elwood City Library, The Read Family Kitchen and The Backyard Sleepover. Children can even dance in front of a ChromaKey wall that inserts them into some favorite Arthur TV scenes. Fun, Arthur-related activities are designed to reinforce the messages behind the Arthur books and television series: that being smart is cool; and that kids face, and can resolve, real-life dilemmas.
The exhibit was created by The Children’s Museum of Boston, in collaboration with Marc Brown and WGBH-TV, the Boston PBS station that produces the Arthur television series. Pizza Hut BOOK IT!® and BOOK IT! Beginners® Programs for Youth Literacy are national sponsors of the tour. The exhibit is sponsored locally by Mission Children’s Hospital, Asheville Cardiology Associates, Dixon Hughes, Mast General Store, and McGuire, Wood & Bissette, PA.
