Gentlepeople, start your engines

The race for Ashvegas city council, and mayor, officially starts at noon today, when the filing ends. We’ve been waiting all summer for some action, so maybe today we’ll start seeing some.

The race for mayor is usually the most fun. As we’ve told you here awhile back, Mayor Charlie Worley would seek another term, and Vice Mayor Terry Bellamy would take another shot at becoming mayor. Both have filed.

We have also said that Councilman Joe Dunn would stand a good chance if he decides to run. Chances are good that he will file. What about Councilman Brownie Newman? Some have said he might run for mayor. He hasn’t filed yet, so the verdict remains out on him (but probably not).

The other two ringers could be two old hands at local politics – former mayor Leni Sitnick and former vice mayor Gene Ellison. Chances are good that one of these two will come out Friday morning to punch their ticket for the ride.

Then we’ll be off and running.

You’ve got a great site going here! I’m a native North Carolinian new to the blogosphere. I love local politics, and though I don’t live in Asheville, I still am enjoying reading this. I’ll be sure to check back in.
