Gannett loses money, readers hate on the C-T

The Citizen-Times today reported on its corporate parent, Gannett, losing big bucks. Meanwhile, the vicious message boards showed no mercy. Here are a couple of comments:

It’s a crappy paper. Very little interesting content, and the news you print is as stale as last week’s bread. How about some good investigative journalism! There’s certainly enough fodder in these hills.

And there was this:

This week they repeated the ENTIRE PAGE of Monday comics again on Tue. There are frequent grammatical & spelling errors–and obviously I’m no genius at either of those so I wonder how many I miss.

I checked on that second comment, and sure enough, that’s what happened. The Citizen-Times, in printing the full page of Tuesday’s comics in Wednesday’s paper, put it like this at the top of the page: “Because of a production error, some of the comics were left out of Tuesday’s newspaper. Here are the missing comics.”

i am a new subscriber and subscribed two weeks ago just to get local news. out of two weeks of papers, the carrier missed delivery 3 days.

the other days i got the paper, it was lackluster, filled with AP news, the local content was yawn-inspiring, and to top it off, they feel the need to do a 3/4 page feature on galoshes, no story just pictures to fill in their lack of news coverage.

it’s hardly worth reading online, i only subscribe now on sunday for the coupons. i put those unused subscriptions funds toward my new york times which is a real newspaper…albeit a bit pricey to arrive via mail.

i actually enjoy reading their in-depth coverage. granted its not local news, but i’ll get a botched version of that on the cit-times site.

they seriously need to clean house and get some damn reporters, not just copywriters to retype news releases and add a punchline at the beginning.

Just be glad you left the AC-T when you did. I don’t think the people at the paper realize how well and truly HATED they are by people in the region, especially outside Asheville.

Their coverage has always been bad, but has grown steadily worse over the past three years, and their recent expansion on teh intertubes is too little, too late.

I hope they go out of business.

I was hoping Bothwell’s paper was going to take off, and give them a run for their money, even if he is lefty. At least he is honest about it, the AC-T is not…and that is bad for a paper.
