Forum today for WNC school community to learn more about the Asheville Google Fiber Initiative

Here’s the email from loyal reader Sandy. Getting the schools more involved is a great idea. Let’s keep the energy around getting Google to Asheville going:

Francine Delany New School for Children is opening its doors for a forum on making Asheville the pilot city for Google’s revolutionary gigabit per second high-speed network.  Educators and the public at large are invited to come at  5 p.m. at on Thursday March 11th, to learn about what this could mean to western North Carolina schools. Speakers from Asheville Google Fiber Network Initiative will present.

Jason Hill, one of the leaders of this grassroots movement, explains that two huge benefits should motivate organizations and individuals to get online and nominate Asheville. “First, if you are currently in school, a high speed network that is 100 times as fast of usually available will enable applications allowing downloads and  collaborations  with other institutions in real-time.  Second, this network will spawn new opportunities for small and medium businesses to come to Western North Carolina. New businesses means high paying employment for those of you who came to school in this area, fell in love with the mountains, and want to continue your post collegiate life in this region.

UNCA, Montreat College, Warren Wilson College, Western Carolina University, Mars Hill College, and AB Tech are among the educational organizations backing the initiative.

Fourth Grade Teacher Sandy Tarantino says she is excited by the possibilities. “Our school already utilizes distance learning technology to give some of our middle school students access to advanced algebra classes. With data moving 100 times faster, connecting to museums, school, or even students at home might become routine.”

The forum for educators and the public featuring Jason Hill from the Asheville Google Fiber Network Initiative will take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday March 11 in Francine Delany’s multipurpose room at 119 Brevard Road in Asheville. For more information, call 236-9441.
