From my column in today’s Asheville Citizen-Times:
I rode out to the Biltmore Estate recently to get an up-close-and-personal view of the estate’s newest attraction, the Antler Hill Village site that combines shopping, eating and estate history.
I specifically wanted to stop at the Creamery, a nod to the old Biltmore Dairy Bar. Biltmore doesn’t make the ice cream sold there, but it does offer a sweet treat named the Winky Bar Sundae. The sundae harkens back to the Winky Bar once sold by Biltmore Dairies. The original bar featured Biltmore’s vanilla ice cream with maraschino cherries and peanuts, all dipped in chocolate and stuck on a stick, says Biltmore Estate spokeswoman LeeAnn Donnelly. The bar was named after Winky, the dairy’s little cartoon mascot.
I can report that the sundae is one satisfying sweet. It’s black cherry ice cream on waffle cone topped with whipped cream and a cherry. Check it out the next time you’re visiting.
