Fezziwig shrinks

Former AC-T business editor and reporter Tim Reid was featured by his old newspaper on Monday in a story describing his weight-loss success. Tim is also widely known for playing Fezziwig in the annual stage presentation in Asheville of A Christmas Carol.

Congratulations to Tim, who once single-handedly stopped a robber by knocking him down, sitting on him and continuously head-butting the guy until the cops showed up. No lie.

About 10 months after he started his diet, Reid weighs 225 pounds, down from 305 pounds. His waist now measures 40 inches, down from 54 inches.

“I told my wife to throw away all my fat clothes,” Reid said. “I don’t know if she did or if she stuck it in a closet somewhere.”

If Reid’s wife is apprehensive it’s because her husband has lost weight before. Reid said he has tried all the diets – Atkins, cabbage soup, even alternating fasting and eating. In the past, Reid has always put the weight back on, but he said this time is different.

“I’m in my 60s now,” said Reid, a father and grandfather. “Life is good, and I want to enjoy it as long as I can.”

Reid is a self-described fat addict. He loves cheese and dairy foods, especially ice cream, and dinners consisting of typical Southern fare like fried chicken and mashed potatoes.

But all that has changed since Reid adopted his new way of eating last fall. He now eats only low-fat foods, filling his plate with lots of fruit and vegetables.

Reid is strict about his new eating habits. He eats the same thing for breakfast and lunch nearly every day and he doesn’t cheat. Even though he would love an ice cream bar, Reid stays away from ice cream entirely. If he wants something sweet, Reid grabs a no-fat pudding cup.
