Asheville, NC (January 5, 2009) – Dave Allen, founding member of UK Post-Punk band Gang of Four in the 70’s, 80’s sensation Shriekback, and currently-active cutting-edge indie music blog and music label Pampelmoose, will speak on Sunday, January 18 at 3:00 p.m. Check www.popasheville.com for location information and tickets.
“Dave is a laid-back guy who is in to talking to musicians and music fans who is interested in being a real part of things,” according to Alex Maiolo of Future of Music Coalition, who will moderate this year’s indie music biz panel and instrumental in bringing Dave to this year’s festival.
Dave is a key figure in the Portland, OR, independent music scene. He will be sharing insights from his many years as a forward-thinking artist and industry person, including thoughts on building community within a city’s own music scene and staying true to one’s own unique path in the music business.
The POPAsheville music committee narrowed a competitive field of nearly 200 submissions to just 30 bands from target cities in the Southeast. Sixteen are hometown bands, while the remaining fourteen slots are filled by the cream from Nashville (4), Atlanta (3), Athens (2), Chapel Hill (1), Charlotte (1), and Greenville, SC (1). Focused on building and supporting a thriving touring scene in the southeast, and supporting a very nearly sold out crowd in 2007, POP ‘A’ band submissions The festival accepted submissions from bands based in: Asheville, NC, target cities are: Nashville, TN; Knoxville, TN; Chattanooga, TN; Charleston, SC; Boone, NC; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; Athens, GA; Raleigh, NC; Chapel Hill, NC.
Over the last three years, POP ‘A’ has grown from a modestly attended, 5-band evening (then called IdFest) to a ravaging feast of creative pop and rock, supported by nearly 1000 music fans from Asheville and beyond.
POPAsheville’s focus is to help create a thriving Southeast scene for touring bands in the pop/indie/rock genres. To this end, the POP ‘A’ weekend includes a music business panel discussion with industry experts, a musician’s party, and other events with the goal of facilitating gig-swaps and helping indie bands with their touring and business careers.
