Press release here:
Echo Gallery at Biltmore Park will host a reception for its Spring exhibition entitled “Threads”, on Friday, April 16th from 5 to 8pm. The show will feature new work by by fiber artists Jen Swearington, Libby & Jim Mijanovich (“Mija”) and Barbara Zaretsky, as well as ceramic pieces by Emily Reason.
Working with recycled vintage clothing for raw material, the Mijanovich’s transform simple, plain, nondescript fabrics into intricate and involved works of art. Swearington uses gesso, shellac and ink to draw, paint and stitch on recycled bed sheets, illustrating stories “that have yet to be written”. Zaretsky is the director of Cloth Fiber Workshop in Asheville. She incorporates organic and sustainable materials in her line of home furnishings and wearable accessories. Reason’s porcelain pottery is thrown on the potter’s wheel, altered and trimmed, then carved, decorated and glazed on the surface.
In addition to these guest artists, there will be new work from member artists including painters Genie Maples, Barbara Fisher, Susan Finer and Cindy Walton; ceramic artist Lori Theriault, photo artist Laurie McCarriar, Textile Artist Susan Webb Lee and ceramic sculptor Anna Koloseike. The show will run through May 30th.
