The Runaway Circus folks are simply awesome. Don’t miss this. First, a note from loyal reader Keith:
Hi Jason,
Thought our upcoming shows may be of interest to you and the readers of Ashvegas. The attached press release has all the details, but the gist of it is we put on a local, nonprofit circus once a year to provide quality, affordable entertainment for the community. This year’s production is The Sloppy Joe Circus and will be held March 19-21 and March 26-28 at the W.C Reid Center in Asheville. Fri and Sat shows are at 8pm and the Sunday shows are at 2pm. In addition, for our last show on Sunday March 28th, we’ll be side-walk parading from the French Broad Food Co-op down to the Reid center, starting at around 12:30pm. Everyone is invited to be part of the parade. As for cost of the shows, it is a $10 suggested donation, but in line with our beliefs, nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
Now for the official press release:
Asheville’s own Runaway Circus will be presenting their 4th annual winter circus at the W.C. Reid Center for Creative Arts during the last two weekends in March. For the past 3 years, the Runaway Circus has been delighting and inspiring thousands of fans, locally and afar, with their off-beat antics and a wide variety of astonishing skills. This year’s event features a larger number of local talent that will appeal to guests of all ages.
Each year, the troupe develops the circus around a central theme, with previous endeavors including a fictitious, early 1900’s cruise liner that sinks to the bottom of the French Broad River. For this year’s effort, Runaway Circus is drawing on memories most everyone will understand….Middle School. Dubbed The Sloppy Joe Circus, the event will feature acrobatics, juggling, clowning/slapstick, hula hooping, trapeze, a live band, and many other talents.
“We wanted to explore all that is weird and wonderful about middle school. The various cliques, eccentric teachers, and awkward social exchanges that define those years makes for great circus material,” said Keith Campbell, who has been performing with the troupe for 3 years. “We hope children and adults will grab a lunch box, a number 2 pencil, and get on the bus to become fun-loving pupils of the circus arts.”
Shows are at the W.C. Reid Center located at 133 Livingston Street in Asheville, NC and will be held at 8pm on Friday March 19th, Saturday March 20th, Friday March 26th, and Saturday March 27th. There will also be matinee shows on Sunday March 21st and Sunday March 28th that will start at 2pm. Tickets are available at the door for a $10 suggested donation, but in line with the troupe’s belief of providing affordable, quality entertainment to the community, nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. Additionally, half of all proceeds from the March 21st matinee show will go to support other local, non-profit organizations.
