Doctor shot
A Henderson County man shot and killed an Asheville doctor Friday morning, a story that kept WLOS busy, though the coverage felt average.
Police charged John Beavers with shooting Dr. Brian Ling twice inside the offices of Mountain Kidney Associates. Police aren’t saying what a motive might be, but they are saying that they’re looking into reports that Beavers’ son was in the care of Ling. Beavers’ son died about two weeks ago from complications from cancer, according to his obituary.
WLOSers brought us some eyewitness reports and an interview with a friend of Ling’s, who obviously was quite upset. There was also the 911 calls to police.
But that was about it. Not sure what else we wanted out of this story, but there seemed to be something missing.
Paddler remembered
A crowd gathered at Asheville Pizza & Brewings to remember a paddling daredevil who was killed earlier this week after being hit by a train.
Daniel DeLavergne was remembered by the close-knit kayaking community as a great friend and incredible adventurer. The facts surrounding his death, though, still appear bizarre. Police said he was camping in a short train tunnel when he was struck by the train. Friends said he was out scouting a location and sought the tunnel for shelter.
College Basketball
You couldn’t really go anywhere yesterday without also tuning into some college basketball news, on WLOS and elsewhere.
In the ACC Tournament, Duke survived by barely beating Miami; Wake Forest, the last-place team in the conference, kept winning by whipping up on N.C. State; while Boston College handled Maryland easily; Carolina looked like crap going up against a Virginia team they whipped by 45 points a couple of weeks ago.
Are you guys watching the Syracuse run in the Big East Tournament? Magical. They’ve one three games by a total of 4 points, adn they had one overtime game. No team has won four straight games to win the Big East, so Syracuse’s game against upstart Pittsburgh today is going to be hot.

Duke has been in the ACC championship game NINE STRAIGHT YEARS and won it seven times. Duke has won FIVE championships since Carolina’s last title. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels have extended their winning streak over Clemson. Is there more to be said?

You just gotta love a Tarheel fan’s way of spinning things. Of course you got your Papa Smurf blinders on so you don’t even understand the fact that your 45 point win against UVA last week was a freak thing. You better have you "A" game today for Boston College.
