Word on the street: Work ends on Loomis Fargo movie production in Asheville

That’s a wrap!

I don’t have it confirmed yet, but the unofficial word from a couple of different sources is that the production work on a big Hollywood known as the Loomis Fargo flick aka the “unnamed armored car movie” is finished in Asheville and Western North Carolina. The movie is based on the true-life events of the robbery of an armored car service in Charlotte in 1997.

Filmmakers have been hard at work all summer. Movie-makers descended on small towns around the mountains, from Franklin to Old Fort. The took to the streets of downtown Asheville to film driving scenes involving a bright red “Loomis Fargo” armored car. And they commandeered the U.S. Cellular Center to build sets, including a mock Mexican airport.

Several of the stars were spotted all over Asheville, dining at local restaurants, shopping at art galleries and generally enjoying the mountains. Owen Wilson was the most visible, eating out, attending an Asheville Tourists ballgame and posing for a few photos. Zach Galifianakis, who grew up just a couple hours north of Asheville in Wilkes County, was also seen out and about fairly often. On Saturday, Galifianakis spoke briefly about making the movie as he gave an intimate interview in front of about 100 people at the New York Studio for Stage, Screen and Voiceover professional acting school in Woodfin.

Kristen Wiig as also spotted out and about, as was big-time producer Lorne Michaels. Other stars were spotted too, including Ken Marino, Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis. Plenty of Asheville residents had the chance to work on the film, either in production jobs or as extras in scenes that included a pool party and a press conference.

The movie most certainly pumped tens of thousands of dollars into the Western North Carolina economy. Catering services, hotel rooms, the production and extra jobs, equipment rental and more all come with a price tag.
