The N.C. Highway Patrol this morning identified three teens killed in a New Year’s Day car crash.

Those were David Hutchison, 18; Shawn Hutchison, 17; and Matt Strickland, 14.

Shawn Hutchison was a junior at T.C. Roberson High School and Strickland was a freshman. The Hutchisons were brothers.

David Hutchison was driving a 2003 Volvo when he lost control about 1:30 p.m. in a curve on Brevard Road near Ledbetter Road and collided head on with a tractor-trailer being driven by Anthony Eugene Carland, 53, of Mills River.

Hutchison was exceeding the 45 mph speed limit when he lost control of his car and the curve was wet, Trooper Gene Williamson said this morning.

None of the teens was wearing a seatbelt, Williamson said.

Carland suffered severe injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Williamson said.

Terrible news in the first day of the new year. Three young men are dead after a head-on wreck today in Arden at about 2 p.m. The three were killed on impact.

Initial WLOS reports said the vehicles involved were a milk truck and a black Volvo.

From WLOS:

Three young men have been killed in a horrific News Year’s Day accident. It happened shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday in Avery’s Creek near the intersection of Brevard Road and Ledbetter Road.

Officials on the scene say a black Volvo hydroplaned, sliding into the opposite lane, and slamming into a container truck. A witness told officials the semi truck then dragged the car about 100 feet into an embankment.

All three passengers in the car were men under the age of 30. They were killed on impact.  The driver of the truck was taken to Mission Hospital with minor injuries.

The incident is under investigation. Officers are still working to determine whether slick roads or speeding were factors.

Terrible. I lived in that area 18 years ago and it was always a crazy area to drive. I see it hasn’t changed.

I cannot imagine the incredible grief that their families must be enduring right now. God be with them in this tragic time. So very sad.

This is another reason we need more police on the roads writing traffic tickets. Regardless of the reason this horrific accident happened we need more police patrolling our roads. Just this morning, Wednesday the second I watched two cars at two different times run a stop sign at Ledbetter and Glenbridge roads. This is so common at this intersection because there is never any police presence. At night people run the stop sign without even slowing down. 191 Brevard road travels several miles between red lights. People travel at a high rate of speed (60mph) on average because they don’t have to stop. I’m for more red lights and more traffic violations being written. A.S.A.P. You do the crime you pay the fine. It seems like the only way to teach people road laws is by putting a hardship on their wallet.
