Carol Motsinger at the Asheville Citizen-Times reports that a new event will replace the defunct Fanaticon. From her story:
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Multiverse!
OK, once you are done shaking your head at that cheesy Man of Steel reference, hear me out: This pop culture community group is truly a superhero.
Multiverse Asheville, founded in August, recently swooped down to save Fanaticon, a 2-year-old Asheville celebration of comic books and comic book culture.
Fanaticon wasn’t exactly a damsel in distress. The organizers simply decided to not pursue a third festival this year. But Multiverse members couldn’t stand idly by and not revive the successful concept.
So from the Fanaticon ashes rose GeekOut 2012, a celebration of comic books, gaming, costumes, art and fan culture planned for May 11-12.
The decentralized convention will take place among a walking radius of downtown venues and businesses hosting dozens of themed events. GeekOut will also be free and offer programming options for all ages.
