Asheville Citizen-Times at work on new entertainment publication

Share

With the hiring of former Verve editor Jess McCuan and Mountain Xpress food writer Mackensy Lunsford, the Asheville Citizen-Times is putting together a team that will produce a new entertainment publication. The publication will replace the current Take5, a tab that is inserted into the newspaper every Friday and distributed as a standalone product in boxes on downtown streets.

Several of the newspaper’s current writers will contribute to the new publication, including entertainment editor Tony Kiss and reporters Carol Motsinger and Casey Blake. I will likely write for it, as well.

The exact content is still being worked out. Food, fashion, music and other “things to do” around town will all likely be in the mix. Look for dazzling photos, a fresh design and new local voices as contributors.

The Citizen-Times has already been touting increased coverage of the “culinary and cultural” scene in marketing materials, and this new publication will be the vehicle. The working title, in fact, is Asheville Scene. Watch for launch in early August.

Noticed more restaurant reviews from CT writers and wondered where the paper was going with that.

With all the National coverage on Asheville as a destination, seems like a good time to jump in.

Will it be online, also?

Good luck to Jess, Mackensy, Carol and the crew.

Laura, thanks for your note. I’m not sure where food reviews will fit in, but we will let you know as soon as we nail it down.

so they are giving away “news” for free in downtown … but those of us who want to view the “news” onlne now have to pay (and judging from the decreased number of comments on stories people aren’t buying it) … good business model – most likely a futile attempt to compete with the various free publications already available on the streets …

– wonder how the City proposed limitations on the numbers and locations of paper boxes will affect this new freebie?

good question, Murphy…
