Asheville celebrity sighting: Zach Galifianakis dines at The Admiral, Red Stag Grill

Looks like Asheville can add another name to the growing list of celebrities who like to hang in Asheville. On Twitter, SocialLifeAvl and a couple of other folks said that Comedian Zach Galifianakis, the beardly dweeb from the 2009 hit The Hangover, was seen at the end of last week dining at The Admiral in West Asheville, as well as the Red Stag Grill in The Bohemian at Biltmore Village.

Guess it should come as no surprise that Galifianakis is familiar with Asheville. The dude is from Wilkesboro, which we all know as the home of Merlefest.

Galifianakis fits right in with Asheville, holder of the Beer City USA crown. This town is also a top contender for Beard City USA.

And this afternoon, a friend told me that he saw Galifianakis at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown. I’ve also heard reports that, since late last week, the funnyman was hanging at Broadway’s, Sazerac and 5 Walnut.

Anybody else seen Galifianakis around town?

a friend of a friend saw him in Earth Fare, I don;t know how reliable that is though.

Me June 30, 2010 - 9:23 pm

The guy behind the seafood counter at EarthFare on Hville Road said Zach had just been in 5 minutes before we got there.

BB June 30, 2010 - 5:39 pm

Did he bring his beardless brother, Seth with him?

gali-lover June 30, 2010 - 3:24 pm

I saw Zach in Ashville too, but he was easy to overlook because of that hot blonde hunk in the cut-off pink flamingo T-shirt that was hanging out with him! That other dude should be in the movies or something! HA HA HA!!!

Thanks for explanation. And for change back to moderated comments. More time-consuming for you, no doubt, but keeps up the tone of the place.

Asheville is a odd place. We fancy ourselves oh so sophisticated and cosmopolitan, and yet we go totally ga-ga over every rumor involving the alleged presence of any celebrity. Anyone else remember the rumors about Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman moving to town, or Robin WIlliams? Then there was the rumor that Steven Speilberg had bought an entire floor of condos downtown. How about when Ben Afflect was supposedly spotted in Malaprops?

Please stop it people, it’s embarrassing.

Deborah June 29, 2010 - 7:58 pm

He stayed with us Friday night. Nice man.

Ash June 29, 2010 - 4:03 pm

Ivy – indeed. And done.

From the looks of it, changing back to reviewed comments will be necessary.

The entire Ashvegas site (blog) seems to be on the decline since Jason went back to the Citizen-Times. Sometimes there are many days without a posting, and when there are, we get non-event news like this stuff. Maybe, he just doesn’t have the time or energy to devote to it any longer. Or, more likely, he is giving the hard-hitting local stories to the C-T, and turning this site into a celebrity blog like TMZ.

Ash June 29, 2010 - 12:47 pm

Curious,
I recently moved to allow comments to be posted without my initial review, and I’m watching to see how it goes. If the trolls continue, I’ll change back.

Curious June 29, 2010 - 12:43 pm

The comments are "moderated," so presumably Ash looks at all of them. He objected to some of the hateful remarks that used to bebposted on the Citizen-Times "Topix" forum. So curious to know why he allows them here? Has he adopted a "anyone can say anything" policy? I can see him letting one comment by GreenAsheville (I kinda liked the "Paris Hilton of the South" remark), but why another, then another, then another . .
What’s your thinking, Ash?

Adam June 29, 2010 - 10:12 am

Greenasheville-

Your comments are inane and idiotic on any forum. Why dont you keep the hatred to yourself?

greenasheville@aol.com June 29, 2010 - 5:03 am

anyway you like it…

greenasheville@aol.com June 29, 2010 - 5:01 am

Feces of trAsheville!

greenasheville@aol.com June 29, 2010 - 5:00 am

I’m sure Gordo will want to give him a celebrity blowjob as an elected "member" of trAshville Shitty Council. The trAsheville Burlesque 24 hour non-stop sex show welcomes you!

greenasheville@aol.com June 29, 2010 - 4:57 am

can I get his autograph? – not!

greenasheville@aol.com June 29, 2010 - 4:56 am

you people really are pathetic. Paris Hilton of the South! I think trAsheville should be re-named Papparazzi chaser!

saltskin June 29, 2010 - 2:35 am

I think Zach is one of the funniest comedians performing right now. Maybe he’s not for everyone, but who is? The commercially marketed comics who are sterilized for mass consumption only end up pandering to shitty audiences in Vegas (Carrot Top), cramming shows like "Marriage Ref" down our throats (Seinfeld, of course), or playing hide-the-salami with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show (Leno, duh). I find Zack Galifianakis to be along the lines of John Belushi, Brother Theodore, Chris Elliot, and even Bobcat Goldthwait. He’s not trying to be topical or edgy… he’s more of an individual, fully realized character whose delivery is subtle, ridiculous, and sometimes bizarre. I guess if you don’t like that sort of humor, you won’t even appreciate people who are good at it. Personally, I *love* it, and I would be thrilled if he had a place in Asheville. I just enjoy knowing there are talented people in my midst, and that there is even a slight chance that their unique sensibilities might have an impact in my environment. I don’t know… maybe I’m just weird that way.

Hey Zach, wanna be roommates? I keed, I keed…

Meg June 29, 2010 - 2:20 am

My husband and I saw him in the parking garage on Broadway….I wondered what he was doing here, but I guess that was a silly question. It’s Asheville 🙂 I’m a big fan of him so I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him out and about! I did do a double take b/c he is one of a thousand bearded men here.

Miss Daisy June 29, 2010 - 1:49 am

He’s hilarious. And he does look like every guy in Asheville.

Shhh June 29, 2010 - 12:22 am

He stayed at the Residences at Biltmore this past Saturday, that place is top notch too. We ran into him in Biltmore Village. Really friendly and funny too.
Pat—he’s actually got some good movies in production and has great potential in comedy. Try not to hate on everything.
And yeah, he’s looking to relocate here.

Jennifer S. June 28, 2010 - 10:58 pm

I hear he’s looking for an apartment here.

Shawn June 28, 2010 - 10:12 pm

Every dude in this town looks like him. I see 5 Zach Galifianakises every time i go out. Or is it galifianakii?

Pat June 28, 2010 - 9:52 pm

More like a very Minor celebrity or one hit wonder. I could care less about "celebrities". How lame.

Not much going on Ash to post this.
