I’m getting a lot of response to a recent post criticizing the leadership at Mission Hospitals. Here’s is another anonymous commenter mostly defending the hospital system’s leadership:
As an outside observer but one who is very familiar with healthcare haveing worked in the field for 32 years, I find it apalling that an organization of missions stature would stoop to have the public believing a few posts on a blog that have no proven facts. Last I remember in this country your innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.
Secondly, if senior managment at mission is so bad, then why do they have a high employee satisfaction scores, high qualiy scores and are making money in a very difficult economy? Some one must be doing sometihing right. I know ,I know the folks writing there opinions on this blog and thats what they are opinions will say that its due to them not senior managment. I say thats ridiculous someone has to lead, chart a course for others to follow.
Again from an outsider looking in as a recent healtcare organization who has partnered with mission, we partnered with mission due to some of these same people being accused of running the place badly. In our dealings with these people they are hard wokring, dedicated and knowledgeable individuals.
But I will say that some mangement definetly needs changed, they need to fear for their jobs because they are lazy and incompetent or should have retired along time ago. All this smells of a good ol boy network rather than whats truly best for mission, and I hope the board doesnt fall for a few disgruntled physicians and managers that just dont like CHANGE. Well with the obama plan they had better get used to it and find someone else to blame like themselves.

It is obvious some of you are getting to the REAL FACTS that have been going on within Mission hospitals since the St. Joseph’s merger. I witnessed many leaders & nurse be "let go", when they didn’t conform to the bullying that has gone on inside Mission for many years. Staff morale & staff satisfaction is NOW at an all time low. In 2005, Mission choose to ATTEMPT to reach a national Magnet certification, which required nursing staff satisfaction and excellence & overall employee input to be recognized. This award goes to some of the best hospitals in our nation. Unfortunetly after over two years of attempting to meet the requirements, the plan was scrapped, beacuase leadership was advised that the key components were missing from Mission PERIOD. It was an attempt to retain nurses that were leaving in hundreds each year. WHY? I can tell you, unsafe work practices for doctors & nurses, unsafe patient care, being pushed to perform more & more with little support from leadership to provide quality care, being asked to break policy to get more done in 12 hours. BIG mistakes were being made, nurses and doctors left that wanted to protect their licenses & had ethics in their practice. Groups of hand surgerons left. Pediatric spine doctors left. Vice presidents left. Now all that’s left within Missin are the scared staff that have been told to suck it up or WE WILL REPLACE YOU. When a staff member made a complaint they were punished by false corrective actions claims that lead to no or little raises. Favoritism was everywhere. When Haywood County hospital had major medicaid practice violations it was all over WLOS news daily for weeks. But during the same year Mission had over 13 CRITICAL VIOLATIONS, and 90 days to fix them, on it’s JCAHO survey, and NO PRESS. ( Check that fact PLEASE) Why? I called WLOS to report it & no news every ran letting the public know how Mission was doing or how unsafe this hospital had become. WLOS & the Mission’s PR dept. have a good old buddy system too. It is about time someone had the morals to come forward & find an avenue to expose the dishonest leadership in Joe Demore and all of his cronies. May God help this hospital & protect the patients until REAL CHANGE occurs.
To Determined—–I couldn’t agree with you more–I have been employeed by Memorial Mission Hospital since before the take-over of St Joseph’s and NEVER have I witnessed such poor morale among the staff—our only hope is that the departure of Dr Beuchler will rally everyone together to support the staff and physicans who work together to make Mission the referral center for Western North Carolina and REMOVE those who are NOT concerned for the PEOPLE of western NC! HOw many more people have to be told "IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT _YOU CAN LEAVE AND BE REPLACED TOMORROW"/?????before someone on the board comes to their sensed and we get the Leadership we NEED! I so miss Tim.Jeff,Jim and the others–especially BOB BURGIN
If only I knew of a way to inform all Mission employees of this web site!!!! And the comment that Damore made in the e-mail stating that Mission doesn’t respond/act on anonymous letters is horsedoda. We’re there! WE KNOW YOU DO! WE ARE DETERMINED to put an end to your destruction of our beloved community’s hospital. You don’t belong here nor do you deserve to sit in the CEO seat. Good always prevails Joe,,good always prevails.
To the "Mad MD:"
First, your anger is obviously obfuscating your ability to see who is on your own team! I was pointing out that the board needed to go back and check out the facts that have been presented on the previous blogs as to the unethical, immoral, harassing, and threatening behaviors displayed by JD and his gaggle of leaderless lackeys. And as for the spelling leading to a lack of credibility….this is a blog and I was using colloquialisms. Slow down, take a breath, and be certain you are making educated, unemotional, responses. We need to help each other. JD is hoping/praying that people will fall to this kind of emotion and attack one another thus letting him escape! Focus!!!!
Talk about a lack of facts. Check your own as to the "recent employee satisfaction survey". CHANGE is not the isue. The threats and lies that come out of Joe Damore’s mouth and the tactics used to achieve his agenda are the issue. I know at least five peoplle that have been personally attacked by Joe Damore. These are hospital administrators (wonder why Mission failed in its attempt to acquire HRMC?), leaders of high profile charities (remember ABCCM), executives of physician pratices (read their signed letter), and other business leaders in our community. At least one of Joe’s outbursts occurred in a public venue and was directed at another hospital CEO.
If the author is indeed an "partner" with Mission, either your corporate values are nonexistent or you too will soon experience the wrath of Joe and Brian when you dare to disagree much less intervere with their agenda.
And by the way, learn to spell or at least proofread your postings. It really hurts your credibility.
Apparently some of the "supporters" of this administration share an important trait with the current administration at Mission. You couldn’t find a fact if it were staring you in the face. Which, by the way, they are in several of these posts! You also did not listen (another shared trait) when these people stated that they feared for their jobs if they shared the truth along with supporting documentation. The evidence is there as pointed out by several posts. All the board has to do is go back through these posts and then take their precious time to do some FACT checking and due diligence. If you think that all of these posts are due to people in lower management and staff positions just "venting" because of "change" then you are not paying attention to the FACTS that have been presented. It is the people of the middle management and staff who ARE the change! They are the people who find the problems and attempt to bring them to the upper management so that improvements can be made. However, it has been obvious over the past several years that the changes needed to assist the staff and middle management have been ignored and these workers have received nothing but lip service from JD and his good ol’ team.
These are serious allegations and they need to be investigated by the board of Mission hospital, NOT by someone who is posting a blog for the public’s awareness!
