Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Knoxville News this year is running a great series of stories about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, all in celebration of the park’s 75th anniversary.

It’s a great series, and one I wish someone in Asheville would do. I’ve seen stories about the geological origins of the mountains to the philanthropy that helped establish the park.

Go here to see the stories.

The Smoky Mountain News’ awesome Outdoors writer, Becky Johnson, has been working for months collecting stories for a book sponsored by Friends of the Smokies on the Park’s 75th anniversary. She’s getting all kinds of cool stuff – the other weekend she spent an entire Saturday with an old Swain County local, exploring the complicated relationship between the Park and Swain County. Watch out for more info on the book or whether the stories will run elsewhere…
