Calling all geek freaks, superfreaks, enivro freaks and the rest: Arts2People to bring FreakinAsheville back to life

Share

Here’s a Facebook notification I saw. For background, FreakinAsheville was an early attempt at a Web site that incorporated a lot of the arts happenings around town. Great name, but it never really stuck. So here’s the latest:

We are throwing a prom.. you read that correctly. A prom for freaks -for adults! www.freakinasheville.com is being resurrected by Arts2People, and to celebrate, raise awareness and stake claim on our freakin’ cultural rights, we are throwing a FreakinProm. The Prom theme this year is the Labyrinth (yes, the Movie)

Prom will be May 28th, at Pack Place! (more details coming later) and unlike High School, it needs to be cool – and all inclusive.

Calling ALL freaks: environmental Freaks, super smart Geek-Freaks, Punks, Goths, Hippies, Hipsters, and of course all you lovelies who are in a class all your own… Come and share ideas, here whats going down, and maybe Join one of the fun committees and make the prom you never got to have in High School.

The first gathering will be a quick sharing of ideas followed by a screening of the Labyrinth. Bring some libations and ideas. This Saturday March 6th at the Landing – 6 PM. There will be another gathering the following weekend – if you can’t make this one or the next one but want to be involved, email Torva at Torvawench@gmail.com.

Dean, having lived in Asheville on and off since the late 1970s — i went to elementary school, high school here, then off to college, moved back in ’92, away again in ’98, then back in 2000 — i’ve heard people calling this town "Ashvegas" since at least the 1980s. i’m not sure who coined the phrase.

it’s funny to me that people don’t get it, don’t get the irony. but i guess that’s how much we’ve grown.

I’m pretty sure I coined "Ashevegas" on freakinasheville back in the day.

I’d just returned from Antarctica after a 14 month stay and I was aghast at was happened to my beloved home and city.

While I used to be disgusted, now I’m just amused (kudus to Elvis Costello for that wisdom)

This was a great site in its heyday. Can’t wait to log back on!

I guess this will go over like Freaknik in Atlanta?

Anyone who was in Atlanta in the early to mid nineties knows what I am talking about.

Get you freak on and call the national guard.
