Biltmore Avenue is totally shut down because of black ice and what sounds like downed power lines. This comes at 10 a.m., according to the online police scanner I’m listening to.
Biltmore Avenue is a route to Mission Hospitals, so its critical to have it open. Local police are notifying ambulance drivers from other counties that Biltmore is blocked.
CarolinaStompers.com turned me on the online scanner, which has Buncombe County and Asheville police. Pretty cool.

Whew, glad y’all cleared up that code thing. It was sounding like Armageddon had hit Buncombe County a couple of years early! What a cool resource tho – thanks Chad and Stypen. And for the translation, Ash!
Lesley,
Most of the codes on that list are not correct for local law enforcement. While the Bunsombe County Sheriff’s Office and Asheville Police Department’s codes are similar, they are not completely the same, either. The number codes at the bottom of the list are from California, whose law enforcement uses statute numbers for radio codes. It is California statutes that folks see on television that leads them to think that they are used nationwide; i.e., "Grand Theft Auto" or "Reckless Endangerment". Neither of those statutes are in existence in this state, which many times leads to confusion for residents here. I’m not sure where there is a list of the local codes…..I imagine if you REALLY want one, you would have to visit both departments and ask for a copy.
We are glad you guys like it. It does get addictive. We broadcast this from our headquarters to Scan America. They send it to the world. We are going to try to boost the volume up Saturday (1/3/09) so it may be down for about an hour.
Will put the local police code numbers up in the resource area of Stompers
so that you will understand what some of the calls are. We will do this Saturday also.
Enjoy.
thanks Lesley!
"chimbley far" = chimney fire.
I found this to help translate: http://www.apsu.edu/oconnort/polcodes.htm
I couldn’t find "chimbley far" – must be secret mountain code. Hopefully I won’t get fired for getting absolutely NOTHING done today.
Mike, it’s totally addictive, isn’t it?
I’m waiting for some of that love talk you often hear, but that’s usually not until about 10:30 or 11 p.m. the "chimbley far" is classic!
Thanks for inducing some bad flashbacks, Ash. Having no self control, I clicked the link and now I’m sitting here listening to the scanner, trying to figure out which crew is closest to the closing at St. Dunstans and whether we can get a live shot out from there. Plus, now we have to get somebody out to North Fork for that Explorer on its top. If only I can hear somebody call a "chimbley far" or a car off in the "medium," my day will be complete. Make it stop!
