Press release here:
Asheville, NC – Blue Ridge Pride presents the Western North Carolina premiere of “Veritas: Gay in God’s Army” at Homewood, September 16th at 8:00pm. Veritas is a documentary about the role of LGBTQ people of faith, produced and directed by Sundance Film Festival artist Talmadge Heyward. Tickets are $10, and all proceeds benefit the non-profit Blue Ridge Pride.
Talmadge Heyward’s second film, following his Sundance featured “Key West: the City of Colors,” is a thought-provoking glimpse into the world of religion and how LGBTQ individuals have developed their own faith. The film, though controversial in nature, is very confident in passing through the lives of several people and their experiences in the Christian church without being insulting to those with alternative beliefs.
The doors open at 7:30pm, and the film begins at 8:00pm September 16th. This premiere will feature the film in its entirety with a panel discussion and reception afterwards. Homewood is located at 19 Zillicoa Street in Montford.
Blue Ridge Pride is a weekend event featuring a day-long outdoor festival Saturday October 10th at Martin Luther King park in Asheville, including mainstage music and entertainers, community talents, educational workshops, regional vendors, and participation from state-wide and local LGBTQ and non-profit organizations.
Blue Ridge Pride is an all-volunteer organization with a five-person Board of Directors. It was formed in spring of 2009, and has applied for non-profit status. Blue Ridge Pride strives to be inclusive of all LGBTQ populations, families, and friends; and to create an exciting day that will educate, support awareness, and entertain the overall community at large.
After several years of under attended Pride Fests, founder Amy Huntsman saw the need for a revitalized Pride festival in Asheville. “Asheville has a vibrant and active LGBTQ community, plus it’s known nationally as a great vacation destination for gay travelers. It just makes sense that we have a Pride festival that reflects the strength of our community.”
