I haven’t seen so much coverage for a new movie theater in years. The opening of the Biltmore Grande theater in Biltmore Park has received front-page newspaper coverage and follow-up stories, as well as coverage from WLOSers, who live right next door at 100 Technology Drive.
It’s true that Asheville hasn’t seen the construction of a completely new theater in more than a decade. But I thought people weren’t going to the movies anymore. I thought people were watching HBO, or using Netflix, or stealing movies off the Internet.
Apparently not in Asheville. The theater has been mobbed all this week during its soft opening. The official grand opening is this weekend. So if you want to see a movie, the place to be is the Biltmore Grande, I suppose.
Here’s what one loyal Ashvegas reader had to say about the theater:
At last! Biltmore Park is a modern marvel that compliments the historic areas of Asheville. I went to the grand opening of the new Regal Movie Theater and finally found comfortable stadium seating with no one’s head in my way. All theaters were sold out that night and it was the first time in a while that I’ve been in a theater that was completely full, but still very comfortable. The staff was more professional then any other area theater. As for the parking, it has ample parking decks. I don’t know why people complain about traffic in this area. It took only minutes to exit the parking deck and get back to Long Shoals Road. With PF Chang’s opening soon, and a new Hilton next year, this is definitely an exciting place to visit!

That right, it is the best thing to happen in Asheville in a long time. If the City Council cared about creating jobs in the city they would ensure more projects like these and others got put through quickly. Instead the city would rather cater to panhandlers and vagrants and all those hippie trustafarians that start screaming every time a new downtown project is proposed. All downtown does is cut off it’s nose to spite it’s face.
I just threw up a little in my mouth.
