We’ll, we’re now moving into the height of the Bele Chere debauchery and butt crackery. The first day seemed to go off well. The weather was overcast and somewhat cool. The meat on a stick was still fresh. And the people-watching was just fantastic.
The musical acts I saw — and I only caught a few — were outstanding. Jonathan Scales put on a whale of a show at the Mountain Xpress booth. Laura Reed and Deep Pocket may be my new favorite local band, as they rocked the Lexington Avenue stage. And I heart Nikki Talley.
The ticketed event at Memorial Stadium appeared to be a success in terms of all the technical aspects, but it lacked atmosphere. People were all spread out on the massive field and in the bleachers. And The Wailers appeared like tiny specks on the giant stage set up there. The music was fine, but there was just no vibe, if you feel me.
On a sad note, Asheville police on Saturday said they found a dead woman hanging from a tree in Aston Park. They responded about 7 a.m. Police say it was a suicide. Hundreds of runners participating in the Bele Chere 5K race saw the emergency scene, which was shielded by big tarps.
