Beans and Berries smoothie shop on Merrimon to close

Share

A couple of loyal readers had told me that the Beans and Berries cafe and smoothie shop is closing. I called owner Dan Scully, who confirms that. He tells me that Thursday is the last day, and he encourages everyone to come out by. The business was too much to handle, he said, with four kids and another successful business – Scully’s restaurant and bar in downtown Asheville.

Scully, who sold the business, says he’s not sure what’s next for the location – possibly a vegetarian restaurant.

They actually had more than smoothies, although those were a headlining menu group for sure. Killer egg salad sandwiches and BLTs. Loved the drive thru, the friendly folks, and the fresh ingredients! Glad Scully is doing what's best for them though. And – it is a tough location. Let's hope something just as good goes in, and I'm hoping that huge lot across the street gets occupied. (former Deal Motors spot).

I'm not surprised. Then again, who would be. I drive down Merrimon multiple times of day and notice that there are no cars parked in front. I thought Beans and Berries had closed a long time ago. I guss it must have been like the Chameleon Soul Food Cafe's excuse: "No foot traffic on Merrimon." Am I driving on the same Merrimon Ave. as everybody else in AVL?

Since I almost never saw any cars in the Beans & Berries parking lot, I have to assume that the reasons for closing the place go beyond, "I need to spend more time with my family." Smoothies are not really a destination product, and with that foot-traffic-unfriendly location they probably weren't attracting enough casual customers. More of a full service restaurant would work better there, I think.
