Be a reporter: Help review Gov. Beverly Perdue’s budget proposal

Share

Sticking to her promise of opening up government, North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue has posted her entire budget online here. There is a ton of information, and a line-item budget. I love this kind of detail. For example, I just took a quick look at it appears that the “dispute center” for Buncombe County, listed under the budget of the Administrative Office of the Courts, will get no funding under Perdue’s proposal.

If you have some time, take a look at the budget and let know what stands out to you. What’s good? What’s bad?

State lawmakers will take this budget and begin working with it. It won’t be final for several months. So what stands out to you?

"The governor wants $1.2 million of your tax dollars to go to “Wildlife in North Carolina” magazine. That’s a more than $165,000 increase from last year".

Does the State of NC really need to be spending over a million dollars a year on a glossy magazine? Perhaps you, as a crack investigative reporter, can find out how much that comes to per subscriber? Why not up the subscription price to $24 for those who want to keep this magazine going? Why not "sell" it to the company that publishes the very successful "Our State" magazine?

Susan Fisher, take note.
