An interesting move, here. What Asheville-based smart phone application developers already exist in Asheville? What’s the easiest way to find them? Who’s the best in town?
Press release here:
AppedOn, a mobile app development company announced that they will be holdingan event at The Chocolate Lounge in Asheville on June, 9th to introduce themselves to the Asheville business community. AppedOn is a division of BlueSHIFT 7, a full-service marketing and web development firm based in Atlanta. They create customized iPhone and Android apps for businesses.
“App” is short for “application”, but now refers specifically to apps found on mobile devices. An app is easily downloaded to a users’ smartphone, giving easy, instant access to pertinent information about a company.
Though many businesses’ information can be found on a website, such content can be challenging to navigate on a smartphone’s smaller screen. Apps are customized for the smartphone screen, but most importantly they are a media form that is always on hand.
AppedOn develops apps for iPhone and Android platforms, which can be smartphones or tablets. They have taken a new approach to apps by designing a number of pre-built features to help speed up development and reduce overall cost. In addition they develop web based software that allows the user to update app content from a web interface. AppedOn also provides a single system to update your website and app content simultaneously.
Sosh Howell, a former Asheville resident and one of three founding members of AppedOn, said he believes that the same transition that happened in the late 90’s with websites is now happening with apps. “In five years” said Howell, “if you’re business does not have an app, then people might not take it as seriously as they would otherwise.
At the very least not having one will mean missed opportunities as individuals increasingly rely on smartphones to navigate the business world”.
The Asheville Launch Party will be an opportunity to meet with the founders of AppedOn in an informal setting and learn about what they do. For those who don’t know much about mobile apps, it will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about them and their business applications.
At the event AppedOn will give away one free iPhone or Android app to a local business. The app will be based on three pre-built features, with additional features available at regular pricing. The entire AppedOn management team will be on hand at The Chocolate Lounge to discuss ideas and answer questions about how apps can help businesses grow and become more effective. For those interested in attending the AppedOn event, The Chocolate Lounge is located at 10 South Lexington Avenue, in Asheville, NC. It will be hosted by The French Broad Chocolate Company, one of AppedOn’s clients.
The event runs from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, and complimentary drinks and appetizers will be offered.

and I should add that I also sold a book about writing apps, which is now over half complete and on schedule to be published this summer.
THERE IS local expertise, we do not need to import it from Atlanta.
and, yes, I actually know how to spell "aggregator" and even what it means. ;-0
We already have local app developers! Like… well… my company ArrSoft. Look for our apps on Android Market.
Especially look for our free app, AVLnews, the ultimate mountain area news aggreator. Get it free here http://goo.gl/kGtuN
Who's the best in Asheville? Don't care, I live in Alexander.
No doubt T. Top Floor rocks it out and does a bunch for the community. Ty Hallock and his staffers are top-notch.
I hear ya, Jeb.
Great info, T. Thank you.
My wife just gave me the heads up about this post and as a freelance iPhone and Android app developer in Black Mountain I can answer the top questions:
-Well, me, of course 😛
– I used to work for Integritive which offers high quality web services including app development.
– TopFloorStudio is another full service firm in town that is developing at least for iOS
– There are several smaller shops and other freelancers in town that probably offer some level of app development (at least PhoneGap or similar low-complexity solutions)
– AB Tech is planning a mobile application programming course, Pamela Silvers is the chairperson of the business computer technologies department there and would probably have helpful input. I'm familiar with the quality of students the A-B Tech web programming courses are producing and if the mobile application program is similar I'd expect many of those students to be qualified to freelance in the coming years.
Ask around! Since mobile apps are tied closely to the web and IT fields it makes sense to ask the geeks.
Well I'm biased of course, and 'best' is a subjective term. As far as I know I'm the least expensive, and the only one currently developing for Android. Keoki , who is the primary mobile developer at Top Floor seems to be focusing more on QR code sales recently and Courtney at Integritive is a skilled Obj-C programmer, although he also works on websites.
I just came back from Steel Pulse at Pisgah right now (aww yeah!) but I'll post again later with further thoughts.
Cheers
App is also short for appetizer and we need another web company in town like we need another restaurant. Or a massage therapist or a yoga instructor or a real estate agent for that matter. This is all in jest, by the way Ash. I don't want any other loyal readers getting upset. Some of my very best friends develop apps.
