From loyal reader Bruce:
What’s up with the “Available” sign in front of the Greyhound station?
Anyone?
While we’re at it, I’ve had another reader ask what’s up with the concrete mixing station on Charlotte Street, right across the street from City Bakery and Blue Water Seafood?
It’s located in the empty lot that was once home to an Ingles grocery store, before it burned down in spectacular fashion several years ago. There are piles of sand and big mixing trucks with “Wagman” emblazoned on them. My reader said they first noticed the action because huge dust clouds would rise from the site every now and again.

There's resurfacing in progress along I-240 east of downtown. The old Ingles lot appears to be a staging area for that work.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the NCDOT is using the Charlotte St. site as a staging area for the I-240 bridge work.
I wish they would FINALLY move the Greyhound station from that dump of a building on the other side of the tunnel, to where it really belongs, which is the downtown transit center on Coxe Avenue. I haven't heard anything about this from the city, so I doubt it.
Many cities throughout the state have integrated intercity and local buses into a single facility within the past 10 years. Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Durham all have, to name a few. It works great. When you get off the Greyhound bus, you then have easy quick access to all corners of the city via the city buses, rather than an inconvenient 30 minute walk or an extra bus transfer to get you there.
I don't know for certain but it appears this is a staging area for the I240 paving and bridge work that is being done.
I suspect the concrete mixing in the empty lot is a staging area for the bridge work on 240 (and the night time work).
