Ashvegas reader: Beware of people on the street

Share

From a loyal reader:

There is an African American Male, 200 pounds,  5′ 10″,  with a grocery bag full of stuff. He has been sneaking around offices during the day on Wall Street.

While in the offices he confronts women asking them odd questions and acting a little crazy. Obviously he is looking for opportunity, so lock up your purses and Laptops at the office.

Dale: The transient population (AKA homeless in Asheville) are sucking all good help away from the legitimate HOMELESS. There's a difference, and in Asheville it is 99% TRANSIENT.

This guy was a Transient probably shipped here from Charlotte. If he had walked into my office while I was alone, and blocked my exit, I would have had only one choice. Be in fear for my life and defend myself. End of story.

That's right, don't be fooled by all these guys with grocery bags begging for change. They are unregistered child Predators, career criminals, and drug attacks etc. They are looking for opportunity so don't let your guard down day or night especially in the public restrooms, library, Pritchard Park, and the Grove Arcade etc. where they hang out to cool down and shoot up. Your not safe in Asheville as long as the missions are dominated by TRANSIENTS and not the families that really need help. Wake up people and take your city back…

I find it appalling for someone to spread irrational fear based off illogical conclusions.
Clearly, you have identified a person entering businesses and offices that do not welcome walk-in customers. That fact combined with strange questions does not equate to criminal activity or looking for the opportunity for criminal activity.

A better lesson learned from this would be that of civic-mindedness and concern for others. Not everyone of different color, socioeconomic background or mental capacity is a criminal.
Strange behavior, such as the behavior described, can be something to raise concern but should be addressed with care and caution, not irrational fear.

"Be aware of people on the street" because they may just NEED YOUR HELP.
