Ashvegas Hot Sheet: The Mr. Moon mascot; Asheville Transit under scrutiny; and more

More of what’s going around:

-Asheville Tourists’ new logo: I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of the new Asheville Tourists logo. I appreciate the effort, and the attempt to honor Asheville’s hippie vibe by going with celestial body as a mascot. But it’s just … off. Here’s the sales job from minorleaguebaseball.com:

The Colorado Rockies’ Class A affiliate unveiled their new identity at the local Hickory Tavern on Tuesday afternoon, introducing a series of logos that strongly incorporate Earth’s only natural satellite.

“We had the desire to change and wanted something fun and exciting that told the history of baseball in Asheville,” said Tourists president Brian DeWine. “The original [professional] team in Asheville was called the Moonshiners, and that got us thinking about the moon and how many people have watched Tourists baseball under the moon through the years.

“The feeling at [McCormick Field] is like camping, in that there are trees and mountains in the background,” he continued. “It can create the same feeling you have camping with your dad, looking up at the sky and seeing the moon. Plus, we always joke that the moon is the ultimate Tourist destination.”

The team’s primary logo is of a home run ball soaring over the moon and toward the Blue Ridge mountains, while the home plate-shaped McCormick Field logo includes the moon shining above the iconic 86-year-old facility. But the celestial body really comes alive on the navy blue glow-in-the-dark home cap, which features a shades-wearing character who goes by the self-explanatory name of “Mr. Moon.”

Your thoughts on Mr. Moon?

-Asheville Transit under scrutiny: Asheville City Council members plan to take a closer look. “That comes after allegations that First Transit rehired at least four bus drivers who had been terminated by a previous contractor for safety reasons,” the Asheville Citizen-Times reports.

-Indigo one-year: The Hotel Indigo just celebrated its one-year anniversary. zen, whose photography is all over the building, has a cake photo here. I was on one of the Indigo’s upper floors for an event over the weekend and just love the view westward from up there. Wish I could afford the Asheville Club at 151.

-Wonderful weather: Hope you get a chance to get outside today and enjoy the 70-degree weather. Ray’s Weather says it will be nice the rest of the week.

Mr Moon is scary looking and doesn't come across as having a good personality. The kids love Teddy, so do I, especially the old Teddy.

Not a fan of the new logo but I didn't like the old one either. I think they are kind of handicapped with the Tourist name. Not much you can do with it. Name change would be great.

Can't say I'm in love with the logo, but I do like the idea of honoring the past. What's to happen with Ted E. Tourist? Do they plan on exchanging him for the moon from the Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich commercials? Will they start having "Popcorn Sutton's Tennessee White Wiskey" Wednesdays?

ashevillain – TedE has not been on the uniforms or logos for quite a few years now…

Change is always hard on some folks, but I think the new logo looks good. Always hated the "A" logo because it's too easy to confuse with the Atlanta Braves (and I hate all that chopping and use of Native Americans as a mascot). And while Teddy Tourist is a good mascot, the team deserves better for a logo.

I have trouble supporting a team owned by the DeWines and partnered with the right wing Rockies with their attempts to make it a Christian team (check articles by Dave Zirin for more on this), but I am a baseball fan and we've gotten to see some pretty special players develop here.

Big fan of the Tourists and McCormick, but the new logo is a strikeout. Will the team be called the "Moon Pies" by the opposition?

Hate the new logo. That's not the Asheville Tourists — must be some impostor team.

As I am not a fan of the new logo, I would be interested to know if they have any of the old logo merchandise for sale.

Also, I was surprised to see AC-T photos with Ted E. Tourist modeling some of the new gear. He got bounced as part of the logo but is still gonna be around as the mascot?
