Ashvegas Hot Sheet: New fence for the Wedge; Taste of Asheville; holiday parade on Saturday; and much more

It’s Monday, and that means mapping out the week ahead:

-New fences for the Wedge: Wedge Brewing is putting up a fence around its parking lot. Wedge owner Tim Schaller tells me he’ll be looking for welders to create decorative metal panels for the fence to match the funky metal art that his brewery location is already known for.

-Shovel or pay in Asheville: This action by Asheville City Council, and reported by the Asheville Citizen-Times, is getting a lot of attention. You know we’re all about sidewalks in this town. From the story:

Following a unanimous City Council vote, city workers can begin issuing a $50 fine to residents and business owners who don’t keep their sidewalks clear of snow, ice and other debris.

-Gingerbread: The Grove Park Inn’s National Gingerbread House Competition is tonight. Viewing of the tasty works officially opens to the public later in the week.

-Elton John comes to town: The music superstar plays a concert Tuesday night at the Asheville Civic Center. That should bring some folks out. If you get a Sir Elton sighting around town, lemme know.

-Best of WNC: The Mountain Xpress will hold its big bash to celebrate its Best of WNC winners on Wednesday. Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, Sons of Ralph, Asheville Vaudeville and Josh Phillips Folks Festival will perform, and there will be plenty of other food and fun.

-Taste of Asheville: On Thursday, the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association will hold its swank Taste of Asheville event. Look for some news about a new emphasis for the association to come out of that event.

-Krekel art show: Don’t miss a great art show featuring the work of Jason Krekel, also Thursday, at Hip Replacements on Lexington Ave. Awesome poster art. And half of one of Asheville’s best bands, The Mad Tea Party.

-Holiday Parade: The Asheville Holiday Parade is set for Saturday. The Steep Canyon Rangers are the parade marshals – does that mean we might see collaborator Steve Martin, too?

-Big River Arts District weekend: By all accounts, the River Arts District studio stroll and Prom!! and Asheville Sound Swap were all great successes over the weekend. The weather was unbelievable. The tourists were fat and happy. The hipsters got up to get down. All good.

-Iron and Wine: The big Iron and Wine concert at the Orange Peel is tonight.

What else?

Will the elderly and other folks unable to get out and shovel be fined, too?

Iron & Wine is sold out, dammit.

Horse Feathers at the Grey Eagle Weds (IDEAL consolation prize for those who missed out on Iron & Wine), and Tyler Ramsey's annual solo show, also at the Greagle, is Thurs.

Plus The Honeycutters and Tommy Womack Friday in the River Arts District.

And Joanna Newsom at the Peel Friday…

Think the next Westy market is Saturday 9-2.

And of course the Holiday Parade this Sat!

We should be able to fine the City for having sidewalks that are in such bad shape.
