Ashvegas Hot Sheet: An election with a recount; gingerbread house competition results; Sir Elton arrives; and more

For a rainy Tuesday:

-Gingerbread: The winning entry in the Grove Park Inn’s National Gingerbread House competition doesn’t look like a house at all.

-Reader question: Is there any place in town to buy a fried turkey for Thanksgiving?

-Shuler’s ready to run: From the Hendersonville Times-News

With Wednesday’s vote for House minority leader nearing, The Washington Post, CBS News and Fox News reported Monday night that U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler had officially announced his “long-shot” bid to take the position from Nancy Pelosi.

-Sir Elton: Elton John will be in Asheville today for a big concert tonight at the Asheville Civic Center. Judging by some promotions flying around on Twitter, if your name is Elton John, you can get a lot of stuff for free around town. I’m gonna give it a shot at Mamacita’s.

-I demand a recount: The hottest election in Buncombe County this year was apparently the Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisor’s race. From the Citizen-Times:

Jeff Turner, who received 176 fewer votes than Chase Hubbard, asked for a recount of the ballots by the county Board of Elections. A candidate is entitled to ask for a recount if the margin of victory is less than 1 percent of the total votes cast.

“When you’ve got that big a turnout in an office, it should be recounted, for the voters,” said Turner, host of the “Jeff Turner Variety Show” on URTV and a current member of the Board of Supervisors. “If it does (change the outcome), then it’s good for the people. If it doesn’t, now I am available to run for (Buncombe County Board of) Commissioners.”

Who does this guy think he is?

-Asheville’s friendly skies: A writer at WallStreetPit.com who says he’s a frequent traveler jumps in on the TSA criticism with some harsh words, but has only nice things to say about the security folks at Asheville Regional Airport.

The TSA people at the Asheville, NC airport were by far the friendliest and most helpful of those at any airport I’ve visited.

-New downtown bookstore: The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that Grateful Steps Publishing House has relocated from Hendersonville Road to Lexington Avenue and has opened a bookshop in its new space at 159 S. Lexington Ave. The owner, Micki Cabaniss Eutsler, is looking for a bookseller to add to her staff..

-Plant coming to Asheville: From SoundSpike.com

Robert Plant’s first U.S. concert since the release of “Band of Joy” will take place Jan. 18 in Asheville, NC, the start of a 15-show run.

-Bank of Asheville parent loses money: From the Asheville Citizen-Times

Problems in the local real estate market contributed to more red ink during the Bank of Asheville last quarter, the bank’s parent company said Monday.

Weststar Financial Services Corp. said it lost $4.7 million — $2.15 a share — during the quarter ended Oct. 31, a big swing from the $132,000 profit it reported during the third quarter of 2009.

-The sun will come out … tomorrow: If we can get through the rain today, we’ll see sunshine tomorrow and the rest of the week. Saturday looks to have highs back in the 60s, predicts Ray’s Weather.
