Asheville woman creates Squirrel Appreciation Day

The Huffington Post, of all places, has it:

There’s also a guide to Squirrel Appreciation Day activities at eHow — here’s a teaser for that:

1. Check local television listings for documentaries about squirrels. The National Geographic Channel and Animal Planet are likely to have a special presentation.

2. Look out your window. Squirrels are everywhere. What can you learn about squirrels just by watching them in your own backyard?

3. Read a book about squirrels and their natural habitat.

4. Research squirrels online. You’ll find several sites dedicated just to our furry friends. Did you know, for instance, that there are 365 species of squirrels?

Christy Hargrove from Asheville, North Carolina started Squirrel Appreciation Day on January 21, 2001. Christy is a wildlife rehabilitator in North Carolina, and is is affiliated with the Western North Carolina Nature Center.

My Jack Russell Terrier loves squirrels! I’m pimping her out as a squirrel lover tp folks that have them tearing out their ceiling insulation and boring into their pantry walls. Her services are restricted to private parties only. She’s been trained to leave the City, State, and Federal squirrels alone.

Rats with pretty tails indeed. Why people feel compelled to feed them is beyond me.

I hate squirrels. The past three places where I’ve lived, squirrels have made their nasty rats-with-tails way into the attics. It’s damn near impossible to get ’em out. We tried everything: Blasting loud music, jars of Squirrel Away, boarding up the hole with chicken wire. Hate those nasty creatures.

I have never seen a squirrel at my house in three years that I have lived at it.
I am located next to a stretch of hard wood forest and there is not a squirrel to be found.

What gives.

Hmm. Yum. squirrels… lip smacking good.

Kidding of course, but if food prices keep rising… I have a bumper sticker on my truck, given to me by some good folks that wanted to play on the "We Still Pray" stickeers. It says "We Still Hunt" with "squirrels" underneath.

Personal favorite, spied on a few rare cars that say "We Still Prey"
