Stock up on olives, olive oil, feta, Greek coffee and more from a new grocery in South Asheville. From food writer Mackensy Lunsford and today’s Asheville Scene:
The Mediterranean Grocery, a new grocery store specializing in Greek, Italian and other Mediterranean food, is now open at 1987 Hendersonville Rd. The store offers a selection of sheep and goat cheeses, spanakopita, pita, olives and fruit preserves. It also carries strong coffee which can only be found in Greek cafes, according to Chris Kroi, a UNCA journalism student whose parents own the store. “It’s food that you really can’t find anywhere else,” she said. “The olives, the cheeses and all of that just taste different because they’re straight from Greece. It’s really authentic.”
Kroi and her family hail from a city in Albania, just an hour’s drive from Greece. “And if there’s one thing we miss, it’s our food,” she said. “So we got an opportunity to open a store down here in Asheville and we thought it would be great for everybody.”
Particularly with the cheeses, Kroi said that the products the store carries are unlike anything that can be found in the area. “There’s an authenticity to it that you can actually taste,” she said.
Hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; 12-6 p.m. Sunday.
