Asheville man running his first marathon, raising $$$ for cancer research

Here’s a nice note from loyal reader Trent:

Well now I have a favor to ask of you, and maybe this is a longshot but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I am running in the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon on June 6th, with a goal of raising $2900 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Last year my brother-in-law was diagnosed with Leukemia, so this really hits close to home. I have been training for about 3 weeks now and I’m up to 8 miles so far and determined to be ready to go come race day. All this to say, I would greatly appreciate it if you would spread the word and help me raise money for LLS. Here’s the link.

Hey Trent,

Thought you’d like to know where your money is going. Dwayne Howell, the president of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, was paid over $525,000 in salary and benefits for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2007. Other employees received compensation in excess of $300,000.

Much of the approximately 250 MILLION dollars taken in by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society annually that doesn’t end up in the hands of overpaid employees is wasted on cruel, outmoded and counterproductive animal experimentation. Species differences between animals and humans lead to flawed science and incorrect conclusions. For example, forcing dogs to inhale cigarette smoke did not show a link to lung cancer; Flosint, an arthritis medication, tested safe in monkeys but caused human deaths; and the recalled diet drug phen-fen caused no heart damage in animals, while it did in humans. The examples go on and on.
